More and more cities worldwide are moving ahead with the vision of Smart City. There is a wide range of approaches and topics that are discussed, developed and tested. Increasingly, the city architects are also developing their own Smart City approaches, and they are exploring – in part practically, partly conceptually – how they can apply them to their respective situation. Each city sets its own priorities here.
However, this process is still in its infancy. Up to now, some major cities have been dealing with the topic of Smart City in practice, although interest in the topic is also increased significantly in other cities. In addition, most of the already active cities are still in a finding and testing phase.
Implementation of smart city
The aim of the project is thus to develop a differentiated overview and an assessment of the current situation in the planning and implementation of Smart City approaches in different cities all over. The guiding principle here is the understanding of Smart City as a city, which makes use of networked information and communication technologies (ICT) to enable ecologically and economically more sustainable urban development, be it in the areas of transport / mobility, infrastructures, housing and facility management, energy supply, public safety or other areas of urban life. The focus is on the implementation of smart city approaches in practice, be it through conceptual foundations, pilot implementation projects or a combination of both.
In addition to a comprehensive inventory of currently identifiable activities in the Smart City area, an in-depth analysis will be conducted on the basis of case studies. In particular, the relation to sustainability, the inclusion of (networked) information and communication technologies (ICT) and the practical relevance or the degree of implementation of the approaches examined play a role in the selection, analysis and assessment of the different Smart City approaches. It also examines the form in which practical analysis of the Smart City is organized in the individual municipalities, which actors cooperate with each other and what their goals are.
The compact presentation of the case studies aims, on the one hand, to highlight the range of current Smart City practices in many cities and to identify models of innovative approaches within the various subject areas as well as across topics. On the other hand, the comparative analysis of these examples shows which abnormalities (similarities, differences, trends) can be identified and which assessments can be made regarding the further development of the Smart City process.
All over the world, municipalities are facing the challenges of making urban life safer, healthier and more energy efficient. Digital technologies offer great opportunities to develop intelligent solutions for the future, especially in the areas of mobility, energy and public administration.
How is the state in foreign countries?
They do not yet exist comprehensively, the Smart City, but only in their beginnings. The term stands internationally for the vision of a digitally networked city or – as a smart region – also a region. Smart Cities are designed to improve the quality of life, the economy and the sustainability of urban environments, and provide solutions to upcoming challenges: more sustainable energy, healthier and more comfortable living spaces, smarter transport and transport systems, better and fairer education.
The port is on its way to the “smart Port “. Intelligent networking ensures smooth and efficient traffic in the port as well as the flow of goods. Optimum data collection and rapid information exchange enable logistics providers and freight forwarders to choose the most efficient mode of transport. Even outside the port, the city is considered one of the pioneers of digitization, street lights brighten when a cyclist approaches, traffic lights know when a bus is coming and trucks get longer green phases. Four employees coordinate cross-departmental digital pilot projects in the State Chancellery and develop an overall strategy for the city.
The “Smart City Cologne ” focuses on interactivity, private individuals, as well as companies and associations, are called upon to jointly develop intelligent ideas and forward-looking technologies. In a district with low-income housing, the city wants to demonstrate what the future might look like networked mobility, less parking search traffic, e-bikes and electric cars for hire, a virtual power plant, energy control via the Internet, the highest standards thermal insulation, photovoltaics on the roof or state-of-the-art communication technologies.
A smart city strategy has a master plan, aims to become a laboratory for intelligent urban strategies – citizens, offices, companies and research institutes have all been involved in the development of the plan.
